Jacob
Sapirstein Junior High and High School for Boys
Principal: Rabbi Yoni HollanderStudent Body:
470 young men in grades 7-12
Location: Ramot, Jerusalem
At the request of parents from the Ramot community in Jerusalem and a subsequent official request from the Jerusalem Municipality, Ohr Torah Stone established
a junior high and high school for boys in this suburban center of Israel's Capital. Beginning
in the 1996-97 academic school year with classes in a temporary building provided by the Municipality,
the school added a grade per year,
until accommodating students in grades 7 - 12 from neighborhoods across
Jerusalem.
Under the guidance of their young, dynamic principal, the boys' school has established unique programs
that chart new paths in curriculum development in order to make learning exciting and accessible for a large array of students. The student population is heterogeneous; students hail from varying socio-economic, social, academic and religious backgrounds. In addition, since it is a community public school, the institution is obliged to accept all students, regardless of capability. Nonetheless, the school's aim is to allow each student the opportunity to recognize
his abilities, to realize his potential and to progress both personally and as part of the group.
The school's curricula is comprised of intensive Jewish studies emphasizing the relevance of Torah to modern life as well as a high level of secular studies, including technology, communications and the arts. Personal responsibility is stressed, with students assisting in curriculum planning as well as writing the bylaws of the new school. The school boasts an exceptionally high level of parental involvement and volunteerism within the community, in keeping with the Ohr Torah Stone philosophy of striving toward
tikkun olam.
