OTS Newsletter- Fall 2001

NEW OTS YESHIVA ATTRACTS TOP STUDENTS
Harvard, Yale, Yeshiva University, Oxford and Cambridge and other elite universities will have to wait as 17 outstanding high school graduates defer their enrollment in order to spend the coming academic year studying at Yeshivat Torat Shraga, the newest Ohr Torah Stone institution in Israel. The yeshiva is named In memory of Shraga Leib, z"l, the father of Richard Fiedler, longtime friend of Ohr Torah Stone.

An exciting program for young men who display academic distinction along with a commitment to intense Torah study in Israel, Yeshivat Torat Shraga will enable its students to hone their Talmudic skills using the universally-acclaimed method of study pioneered by its rosh yeshiva, Rabbi Chaim Brovender. The young men will also participate in chaburot (classes) given by outstanding scholars in the beit midrash of the yeshiva campus in the Bayit Vegan section of Jerusalem.

With the objective of fostering an understanding and appreciation for the entire spectrum of Orthodox Jewish thought and scholarship, Torah Shraga will expose its students to some of the outstanding Torah personalities and scholars from the Hassidic, yeshiva and modern Orthodox worlds. "A commitment to honesty is an important quality of responsible Jewish leadership," says Rabbi Brovender. "Thus, we are taking a multi-philosophical direction that will nurture understanding and respect for all of the approaches to Orthodox Judaism." The yeshiva's staff will also reflect the broad scale of Orthodox philosophy, ranging from graduates of OTS's Yeshivat Hamivtar-Orot Lev to scholars from the Mir and Brisk yeshivot. Torat Shraga will place great emphasis upon Zionism and the land of Israel, with regular outings scheduled to explore its history and significance. "The Tanach will be our guidebook for tiyulim, as we learn about the miracle of the return to Zion," explains the yeshiva's director, Rabbi Moshe Cohn, who served as a regional director of the Orthodox Union for 16 years before making aliyah and settling in Israel this summer. "We want our students to tour Israeli sites in the context of what they are learning. They will study the relevant sources in advance, enabling them to experience Israel not as tourists, but as scholars."

One Shabbat each month, the yeshiva will bring its students to various communities across Israel, to illustrate the intricately-woven tapestry of the Orthodox world and educate the students about the pieces that make up the mosaic.

"It takes courage to launch a new program for overseas students in Israel these days," admits Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Chancellor of Ohr Torah Stone. "But Yeshivat Torat Shraga will fill an important niche for outstanding young men who are equally devoted to Israel and to a warm, all-encompassing Torah experience."
