Q & A - WITH RABBI RISKIN

Q: Is it permissible to study secular subject matter for school on Shabbat (obviously without writing any notes)? Even if it is permissible, is it "not in the spirit" of Shabbat?

A: It is permissible to study secular subject matter if you are deriving intellectual enjoyment and moral benefit. But if your studies are only for the sake of getting a good mark in school, then it is prohibited.

If you have a question for Q & A, send it to ots@ohrtorahstone.org.il . We cannot guarantee that all questions received will be answered in this column.
