Q & A - WITH RABBI RISKIN
Question:
Answer: Most halakhic authorities define "the house" as the place where we live and sleep, and therefore so long as no danger is involved, the most appropriate place in the hotel would be in one's room, by the window. It should be noted that the law concerning Shabbat candles is different. The lighting of Shabbat candles is for the purpose of adding to our "oneg Shabbat" (Shabbat pleasure), and hence we must enjoy and benefit from the light on Shabbat eve. Obviously, while we are sleeping we cannot enjoy the light, and therefore it is preferable that Shabbat candles be lit in the place where we are to eat. If this is impossible, then one should take care to remain in the vicinity of the candles for at least fifteen minutes, in order that we indeed enjoy and benefit from their light.
