Q & A - WITH RABBI RISKIN

Question:
Is it permissible to have a dairy ("milchig") meal as one of the two main meals on Shabbat?

Answer:
On Shabbat - as on festivals - we customarily follow the principle that "there is no joy without meat and wine". Certainly, if a person particularly enjoys eating meat then he should do everything possible in order to eat meat at both of the two main meals on Shabbat. Support for this is to be found in the "zemirot" that we sing on Shabbat - "To indulge in delights; fatted poultry, quails and fish". However, concerning one who is unable to afford meat for Shabbat, Rabbi Akiva teaches: "Make your Shabbat like a weekday, and do not rely on help from others" ( i.e. one should not use money given as "tzeddakah" in order to buy meat for Shabbat). If a person believes that dairy foods are healthier, or enjoys eating dairy foods more than he enjoys eating meat, then he may eat "milchig" or "parve" meals on Shabbat.
