Sewing Lessons
Workers in a textile factory slated for closure refuse to
accept their fate; together, they take matters into their own hands and
realize their dreams. This is the plot of The Seamstresses, a play by the
late Elisheva Greenbaum, which was staged by seniors in the theater track of
the Shavei Rachel High School for Girls, under the auspices of the Ann
Belsky Moranis School for the Arts.
“The production, about women who sew, represented the
tying of a knot in a thread that has woven through the past four years of
the students’ lives,” explained Nurit Pasternack-Goodman, drama
coordinator at the school. “The girls took responsibility for every aspect
of the show, from direction, production, costume and set design, makeup and
of course, acting. They chose this specific play to express social
commentary and articulate precepts important to their lives: the ability of
each individual to shape her own destiny, the power we have as women, and
the support we can offer one another.”
The evening performance, which took place in February 2008, also featured
an impressive gallery presentation of final matriculation projects from the
talented students of the school’s arts track. Under the banner “Because
of the Wind,” the projects explored issues of personal identity, values,
tragedy and loss.
