OTS Newsletter - Fall 2008Rabbi Eliahu Birnbaum honored for Excellence in Diaspora Reporting
Rabbi Eliahu Birnbaum, director of Ohr Torah Stone’s Beren-Amiel Educators Training Program and the Straus-Amiel Practical Rabbinics Program, was awarded the prestigious 2008 B’nai B’rith Journalism Prize for Excellence in Diaspora Reporting at a July 6 reception in Jerusalem. Rabbi Birnbaum was cited for his in-depth articles on small, remote Jewish communities, published in the Hebrew-language Makor Rishon newspaper. Birnbaum based these columns on his own experiences as he crisscrosses the globe each year to visit OTS graduates who are working as educators and rabbis. In selecting Rabbi Birnbaum for the award, the distinguished B’nai B’rith Journalism Prize jury praised his successful integration of contemporary and historic materials on his "huge scope" of subjects, as well as the fact that Birnbaum had personally visited all of the widely distant communities about which he wrote.
