OTS Newsletter - Fall 2008
Darkaynu Volunteers
Community service is a vital – and very
popular – part of the Darkaynu programs for developmentally
disabled young women and men. “Our women rotate their weekly
volunteer efforts between packing food for the needy at Yad
Eliezer, walking dogs for the homebound elderly (whom they visit
as well), lending a hand in a nursing home, and taking a
severely handicapped boy out to give his family a respite. The
men volunteer twice monthly by cooking and serving in the Chazon
Yeshaya Soup Kitchen,
sorting clothes at the Yad B’Yad chessed
center in Efrat, and helping out at the Pina Chama in Gush
Etzion, where they offer cake, coffee and company to the
locally-stationed soldiers,” explains director Elana
Goldscheider.
“Our students are very dependable, hard-working
volunteers. Best of all, these young people, who have so often
been on the receiving end of chessed, are proud and
delighted to be taking care of others in need.”
