OTS Newsletter - Fall 2006A New Look
Ohr Torah Stone has adopted a brand new logo, which reflects its overall vision. “The new look effectively embodies the wide spectrum of values that OTS pursues and instills in its students,” explains Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, founder and chancellor of OTS. “It reflects our ideal of a centrist, modern Orthodoxy that is true to Jewish law, but at the same time tolerant, accessible, relevant, and socially just.” Since its establishment in 1983, Ohr Torah Stone has grown into an extensive network of educational institutions built on the cornerstone values of Torah and tikkun olam. “We sought a symbol that would express both our growth and our ultimate goals,” relates OTS Director General Yinon Ahiman. “The basis of the new logo is a Magen David, which represents our bottom line: safeguarding Jewish values while nurturing and defending Israel. The Star of David is comprised of an orange checkmark, which symbolizes our schools’ educational excellence, a green component, reflecting cultivation and growth, and a yellow segment representing ’Ohr Torah’ – literally, the light that emanates from the Torah. Inside the Magen David is a globe, because our students come from the four corners of the earth and our graduates make a lasting impact all over the world.” The arcs surrounding the Star of David evoke the luchot habrit, the stone tablets bearing the Ten Commandments. “The curves of the luchot are broad, all-encompassing and embracing,” elaborates Rabbi Riskin. “They reflect what Judaism is meant to be, what we instill in our students, and what our alumni impart to others, in Israel and in communities around the world. In all, the logo illustrates Ohr Torah Stone’s dedication to promoting Judaism which is grounded in halacha yet open, tolerant, nurturing and pertinent.”
