"Yad
L'isha"
Can a woman who is unhappy in her marriage initiate a divorce? For the past 700
years, the answer to this question was negative, but in previous generations,
the reality was very different. In this groundbreaking book, Rabbi Riskin proves
that Jewish Law then allowed - and still allows - a woman to initiate divorce
proceedings. Through a careful analysis of Talmudic sources, the writings of
Rishonim and various Poskim, Rabbi Riskin concludes that when a recalcitrant
husband refuses to grant his wife a Jewish divorce, a special Rabbinical Court
in Jerusalem must be established, in order to retroactively annul the couple's
marriage and free the chained wife from her "aguna" status.
