...at Shavei Rachel
May 2002
Last year the high school inaugurated "An Evening of
Monologues", during which the Eleventh Grade drama
students presented publicly the one-woman shows
which represented the first half of their five-point
matriculation examination (all of the students
received a perfect score). The second half of the
matriculation grade is based upon a joint production
in the Twelfth Grade, which took place at the end of
March.
For this production, the students chose to perform a
Jewish adaptation of 'Everyman', the well-known
medieval morality play. When Everyman is summoned by
Death, he can persuade none of his friends-Beauty,
Kindred, Worldly Goods-to go with him, except for
Good Deeds; the point, of course, is that we can
take with us from this world nothing that we have
received, only what we have given. This is a
poignant and especially meaningful reminder for
Shavei Rachel students, who travel the Tunnel Road
to and from school and for whom Death's imminent
arrival is a real prospect which they must face on a
daily basis.
Ministry of Education experts in various spheres of
acting and production were in the audience to grade
the students; again, perfect scores were received
all around. In addition, representatives of the
Efrat and Gush Etzion local councils were so
impressed that the students were asked to stage a
repeat performance later in the year for local
educational professionals.
Additionally, this year's eleventh grade drama
majors performed in the school's second annual
"Evening of Monologues". Like last year, Shavei
Rachel also used the opportunity to exhibit the
works and designs of the students in the Fine Arts
and Graphic Arts Programs.
