Shavei Rachel

Shavei Rachel High School for Girls in Neveh Daniel joined the Ohr Torah Stone network in 1998, under the auspices of the Ann Belsky Moranis School of Arts. Three years later, the results are in: based on the outstanding achievement of its 11th and 12th grade art, drama and film students in the national matriculation (bagrut) exams, Shavei Rachel now ranks as one of Israel's leading arts schools for religious girls. Shavei Rachel's program integrates encounters between Judaism and the world of expression and creativity while offering students a good deal of personal attention and encouragement.

The matriculation exam in drama required each student to produce and perform a monologue. Presented at the Gush Etzion community center, before a live audience that included the testers, the scenarios the students chose mirrored the past year in Israel with their depictions of grief, despair, dashed hopes, fear, crises of ideology and identity. The students' individual monologues presented them with a forum in which to wrestle these emotions and ultimately triumph; an inspiring and cathartic experience for the actors and audience alike.
