OTS Newsletter - Fall 2008Seizing the Day in Hong Kong
While visiting Hong Kong recently as the guest of Rabbi Martin van den Bergh and the Ohel Leah Synagogue, Rabbi Shlomo Riskin received spontaneous thanks for a hospitality that OTS and his own community of Efrat had extended six years before. At the close of a Brunch-and-Learn session, participant Baruch Lobel-Lavi, a shaliach in the Hong Kong community, seized the opportunity to recall the traumatic days of the Operation Defensive Shield emergency call-up of 2002. "My IDF platoon was based in Efrat and serving in Bethlehem. On the very first day, hot, home-cooked meals began to arrive from residents of Efrat and from the Ohr Torah Stone kitchen. We were amazed at the display of caring and generosity. But even more amazing was that for all the weeks we were stationed there, fresh meals never stopped coming. All these years, I’ve harbored a feeling of gratitude. I’m glad to finally be able to say a personal thank you to Rabbi Riskin, to Ohr Torah Stone and to the remarkably thoughtful people of Efrat!”
