Rabbi Shlomo Riskin
Chayei Sarah

The Torah portion of Hayyei Sarah consists of two incidents, Abraham's purchase of a grave site for Sarah and Eliezer's search of a wife for Isaac. What characterizes both stories is the exceptional literary manner in which they are recorded: our Bible is always distinguished by its terse, bare-boned verbiage, causing the reader (or listener) to read between the lines and rely upon parallel word associations in order to comprehend the full implication of the message, whereas these two descriptions are recorded in painstaking detail, replete with extensive and seemingly unnecessary dialogues
